The Hampton Roads economy picked up steam in the first quarter of 2013, according to ODU's Economic Forecasting Team. After growing at only 0.4 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012, the local economy grew at a rate of 2.5 percent in the first quarter of this year, the team said in a report issued May 21. Historian, educator and author Ken Bain signs a copy of his international bestseller, "What the Best College Teachers Do," for Debbie Bauman (left), assistant dean of the College of Health Sciences, at the Center for Learning and Teaching's Faculty Summer Institute on Tuesday. Bain delivered the keynote address and conducted a workshop, both titled "Learning By Design: How to Foster Deep Learning," at the two-day institute. Bain is the provost and vice president for academic affairs and professor of history and urban education at the University of the District of Columbia. Pictured with Bauman is her intern, Rasha Alotiabi, a recent master's graduate of the dental hygiene program.
