CVC Donations to Foodbank Will Count Toward Holiday Hoops Classic Competition
The thermometer is rising - currently at 80 percent of the $113,500 goal - as ODU faculty and staff pledges continue to come in for the Commonwealth of Virginia Campaign (CVC), the state's annual fund drive to benefit thousands of local, state, regional, national and international charities.
The university's campaign organizers are hoping to meet the goal before the holiday break. Those who have not yet turned in their pledge forms are encouraged to do so before the semester ends, said Karen Meier, assistant vice president for community engagement, who heads the ODU campaign.
Meier recently learned that CVC pledges that are designated to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia, and turned in by Dec. 15, will count toward ODU's total in the Governor's Holiday Hoops Classic Food Drive to benefit Virginia food banks.
The nonprofit Federation of Virginia Food Banks is the official "Cause of the Classic, and encourages citizens and fans to support their favorite university by supporting their local food bank.
This year the University of Richmond, George Mason University, University of Virginia and ODU are facing off on the court, and Virginians can show their support for their favorite team by supporting the "Cause of the Classic." All students, faculty, staff and fans are encouraged to consider making a food or financial donation and designate one of the four participating universities to get the credit for that donation.
"The Old Dominion University community has a proud history of community engagement, volunteerism, and service to others. So we are honored and excited to be a part of Gov. McDonnell's Holiday Hoops Classic," said President John Broderick. "Students, faculty, staff and friends of Old Dominion are geared up for the friendly rivalry with our higher education colleagues, but more importantly for the good cause toward which we'll all be working."
