Biology, English Profs Will Be Guests on 'With Good Reason' Radio Show

Old Dominion faculty and staff members make up the entirety of next weekend's guests on the public radio show "With Good Reason."

Lytton Musselman, professor and Eminent Scholar of biological sciences, and Delores Phillips, assistant professor of English, will be interviewed on the 30-minute program, produced by the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities. The show airs at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 20, on WHRV-FM, 89.5.

For some, Christmas may conjure images of bourbon mixed in eggnog or hot-buttered rum, but biologist Lytton Musselman is making his own cordials and spirits from wild plants like mushrooms, roots and berries. Musselman loves the distinct differences in flavor each plant brings to the liquor because, he said, "we are reminded of the glens, marshes, prairies, lakes and forests where they live, who they hang out with and their seasons of life."

Musselman is joined on the segment by Jim Raper from ODU's Office of University Relations, who agreed to be part of the show to offer his comments as designated taster of the concoctions. Raper is the editor of Monarch magazine (see photo below).

Phillips will discuss how multicultural families deal with holiday foods that will be on the table at this time of year. She speaks from personal experience as an African American married into a Vietnamese American family, with in-laws from both cultures.

"With Good Reason" has twice won the Gabriel Award for Best Documentary/Public Affairs Program. It also is the recipient of top honors from the Virginia Association of Broadcasters and won a second-place award in the Public Radio News Directors competition.
