Showing the Love: Art Education Students Help Hope House Guests Make Valentines
Members of Old Dominion's Art Education Student Club, a chapter of the National Art Education Association, hosted guests from Hope House the afternoon of Feb. 10 at the art education studio classroom on campus to help them create original valentines.
The club has worked for several years with Hope House and the people it serves. The Norfolk-based organization provides individualized, supported living services to adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities, who have a primary diagnosis of mental retardation.
According to Patti Edwards, ODU senior art lecturer, the goals of this partnership "include fostering meaning through art and student engagement through the visual arts in arts education."
Many ODU students volunteered at the recent gathering, including Carlie Bagley, Allan Lumagui, Miguel Urguia, Crystal Bialas, Suni Pickard, Anne Waterfield and Cynthia O'Hara, and ODU alumna Julie Groman. Waterfield and O'Hara serve as president and vice president, respectively, of the ODU club. Both are in their student teaching experiences in local schools.
