VIRGINIA DEPT OF EDUCATION (VDOE) WEBSITE

Background

TTT was established in 1994 as a Department of Defense program. The National Defense Authorization Act for FY 2000 then transferred the responsibility for the program oversight and funding to the U.S. Department of Education but continued operation by the Department of Defense. The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 provides for the continuation of TTT which is managed by the Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Education Support (DANTES) in Pensacola, FL.

Goals and Objectives

Reflecting the focus of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001, TTT's primary objective is to help recruit quality teachers for schools that serve low-income families throughout the U.S. TTT helps relieve the teacher shortages, especially in math, science, special education and other high-need subject areas, and assists military personnel in making a successful transition to second careers in teaching.

Program Function

TTT offers a maximum award of $10,000 to eligible military personnel (check eligibility at DANTES website at bottom of the page) to pay for any approved teacher licensure program or to provide a salary bonus (cannot be used for Principalships and Guidance Counselors) in any state. Acceptance of any monies obligates the Troops to Teachers participant to teach for three years in a district with at least 10% poverty level. Eligible schools include those where 50% + students receive free/reduced lunches or at least 13.5%+ students are enrolled in special education (Individual Disability Education Act -IDEA) percentage. Opportunities also exist for those Troops who do not hold BA/BS degrees to use stipend funding for coursework required to obtain the Technical Professional License in Career & Technical Education.

The Licensure Process

Please first read the document "GETTING STARTED" under the Information link at the top left. Then, review the link Chart: Requirements & Routes to VA Licensure to the left.  It describes the process for:

a) the individual who does not possess a bachelors degree and desires to enroll in a traditional program,

b) the individual with a bachelors degree, who only desires licensure, and not a higher level degree,

c) the individual who desires a masters degree and licensure, and

d) the individual who prefers an accelerated, alternate route to licensure in a non-traditional academic setting

To review a list of the types of endorsements (subjects to be taught) available on the actual license, review the VDOE Licensure Regulations at the left to determine the grade level and subject you'd like to teach: elementary (preK to grade 6), middle school (grades 6-8), and secondary (grades 6-12).

The Approved Teacher Prep Programs with Endorsements document identifies the specific licenses offered by the 37 teacher prep colleges in VA.
